As I Sober Up

by denisevlogs on Feb.22, 2009, under Uncategorized

Tonight for the first time in a LONG time I went back out into the “real world”.

I mean… I’ve been outside of my house obviously before tonight. But I haven’t gone out to a PARTY in a very long time.

I went out into a scene I used to be quite familiar with a year ago. An overcrowded club/bar in Hollywood filled with an array of familiar, unfamiliar, and almost forgotten faces.

It was fun. I guess.

Hearing “so what are you doing now?” was pretty irritating and redundant until after my fourth drink.

After my fourth drink it also started to actually be fun to hug and kiss people I barely even spoke to when I saw them on a daily basis.

People are funny.

You look the way you think you’re supposed to look and say the things you think they want to hear… and hope to fit in and not look awkward and uncomfortable.

Then sneak outside for a cigg and a mini panic attack.

Go back inside to get lost in the sweaty crowd until you finally find an open airy spot… where the creepy man that you refused a drink from earlier comes to find you. Politely smile and escape back into the heavy crowd you so desperately pushed your way out of before.

Decide you spent your due amount of time here and head out only to be stopped by the girl that has been DYING to talk to you all night. She goes on. You make several attempts to explain that you are on your way out. She goes on anyway.

Someone else walks by that she’s been DYING to talk to. Thank God.

You continue towards the exit as you say “let’s get together soon” to about 50 people you plan on not seeing for another year.

Finally, you’re out.

And then you realize you left your coat in the back room of the club.

No wonder I’m addicted to the internet.

Ah I know how you feel……I also forgot that we have the same theme….as does brendyn. Ergo, I’m changing mine up lol.

But you should still get out there.

That’s the beauty of the internet. We’re here for you, on your terms and schedule (mostly). And that goes for all of us. We can all socialize (usually) when it feels right for us, though not always with the people we’d prefer at any given moment. But the flexibility of the situation is alluring. Want to walk away from a conversation for 10 min? No problemo. Want to make it 20? No problemo. Nobody feels ignored or awkward. Done for the night? You’re already in your jammies and 20 feet from your bed (or possibly already in it). Sure there’s a downside…being present with other humans in the right situation can satisfy a need I can’t quite describe. Maybe we’re a bit like fish wherein we jet jumpy and nervous if we go too long without being physically present with our own kind. Lately I find the challenge is to discover the right balance, and the right crowd, however fragmented that crowd might be. And it’s strange but I feel similar social pressure to remain in a chatroom sometimes, as though leaving will send the message to the host that I’d rather be elsewhere. Balance…need me some of that. I guess the internet is like playing with lego. You can use your imagination and make something you like, but sometimes you want someone sitting right there with you playing along. This was rambly…sorry. I’m a rambly guy :)

Being older than most people I follow and/or interact with on the web, my perspective might be a little more jaded. I don’t really agree with the idea that the direct human contact is all that special. I believe it’s special when you’re younger (kind of a biological imperative), but the older I get, well…not so much. The scary part, Denise, is that on very rare occasions I go out to a club I haven’t been to in a couple of years, and I see those same people still there, but looking somewhat worse for wear. Anyway, your blog is short and sweet, conveys a definite profoundness, and has already made me like your blogs better than your vlogs.

i am quite often surfing on the net virtually all of the evening which means I have a propensity to browse quite a bit, which isn’t normally a beneficial option as the largest part of the internet resources I discover are constructed of useless crap copied from various other web sites a million times, but I gotta say this website is really not bad at all and possesses a bit of original material, therefore thanks for smashing the trends of merely replicating other folks’ sites, if you ever wanna play a couple of hands of myspace poker together with me just send me a message – you have my email :)
